The Halsell Difference

Halsell Brokerage & Distributing Company was started in 1938 by Louis Halsell Sr. In the early days, Louis Sr. was a manufacturer’s representative for the Anchor Hocking Glass Company, focusing on the tableware and container lines. When Anchor Hocking Glass acquired the Ewing Steam Cleaner Company, Louis sold custom steam cleaners, and later industrial water heaters for the coin-op laundry industry. Over time, he also moved into the food packaging equipment arena.

In 1958, Louis Halsell Jr. (known affectionately to our customers as Lou) graduated from CU-Boulder and joined his father in the business. Lou became the Western Region Sales Manager for Ewing Manufacturing, and also continued to grow the food packaging equipment side of the business. Lou Sr. retired in 1959 and passed away in 1960, leaving Lou Jr. in charge of the company. In 1970, in response to customer demand, Lou expanded into food service items, primarily selling to caterers, commissaries and wholesale food processors.  Amy Tomlinson, Lou's oldest daughter, helped to grow the food packaging distibution part of the business in her years with the company.  Lori Halsell Sandberg, Lou’s youngest daughter, joined the family enterprise in 1986.  In 1990, Lori married Bill Sandberg, and he  joined the business soon after.

Andrew Johnson is the latest addition to the company. Andrew married Lori and Bill’s daughter Kelli in 2017, and joined the business soon after. Andrew is quickly learning the ropes and is proving to be an invaluable and enthusiastic member of the team.   Lou’s middle daughter Susie joined the crew on a part-time basis in 2008 after retiring from a career as a corporate HR Director. Susie helps with general functions including administration, warehouse/inventory management, purchasing, etc., enabling Lori, Bill, Lou and Andrew to focus on what they do best – providing excellent customer service and partnering with our customers to develop solutions to meet their businesses’ particular needs.
